Arnfrid Beier, author of LOVE LIES: A Journal
I was born in Germany. I came to London in 1960 to study English for a year – the year never ended.
I attended university in London and went on to Leeds to do my doctorate on Hans Jacob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen’s Miraculous Bird’s Nest and to write LOVE LIES: A Journal, which has been a life-changing experience.
I now live in Yorkshire. Apart from walking and reading, I have an interest in the teachings of Buddha and all things spiritual.
Things I like doing!
- walking in the hills and talking in four different languages
- being in love and sitting in the sun, eating the blackest of rye bread and drinking a glass of wine
- reading, writing and watching foreign art films
My three favourite books:
- Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse
- Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
- Simplicissimus by H.J.C. von Grimmelshausen
Because these books remind us of our susceptibility to worldly illusions.
My favourite films:
- A Touch of Zen directed by King Hu
- Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring directed by Kim Ki-duk
- Ugetsu Monogatari directed by Kenji Mizoguchi
Because they highlight how we can fall prey to our delusions.
